There has been much grim absurdity surrounding the idea that gender is a pick ’n’ mix with, among others, grammatical requirements requiring the utmost respect and sensitivity. If young Susie or Peter decide they don’t like being so clearly demarcated as boy or girl, or man or woman, then one would think it is Susie or Peter who must bear the burden of that inconvenience, not language itself. Living Western languages have already tied themselves in knots over the problem of the non-binary, or desirously genderless, person. English is a mess now, with everyone referred to cautiously as “they” even in the singular. But Oxford is taking this a step further, redoing the Latin of its ceremonial occasions in order to respect the grammatical needs of those “who identify as non-binary”. For 800 years the university has conferred degrees in Latin – but it is set to vote to change the wording to make it more, you guessed it, “inclusive”. A Latin message of congratulations will be gutted of words that are gendered. If the changes go ahead, students will not be referred to as “magistri” (masters) but “vos”, a neutral term for “you”; the word “doctores” (doctors), being masculine, may also get the chop. For those undergraduates deemed possibly offended by the masculine or feminine word for “who”, a non-binary-friendly alternative is being supplied. It’s not that the heart bleeds for those who bear witness to, or benefit from, the niceties of an Oxford graduation ceremony. And on the surface, this looks like a tiny thing, albeit absurd. But it’s a sign of how far lunacy has made tracks into the deepest chambers of institutions known for their sobriety of thought and tradition. And that is big, and it is scary.
